Free backup app · storage separate

Vorta is a GPL-3.0 backup client for macOS and Linux. Its BorgBackup-based local workflow needs no application subscription. You supply a drive or supported remote repository; hardware, storage, electricity and any paid hosting such as BorgBase are separate. It is a file-backup alternative to an Arq workflow, not a paid storage plan or whole-disk image service. This listing does not promise native Windows support.

Installation and setup

Install on your computer · Instructions checked 2026-10-14

On macOS with Homebrew installed, use brew install borgbackup, then brew install --cask vorta for the workflow without mounting. On Linux with Flathub configured, use flatpak install flathub com.borgbase.Vorta. Choose only the branch for your operating system.
Launch Vorta. In Add Repository, select New Repository… and choose a destination folder separate from the files you are backing up. Configure encryption and retain the passphrase off the source machine before selecting Add.
In Sources, add a small test folder. Select Start Backup and check that a successful archive appears.
In Archives, select the test snapshot and use Extract to restore to an empty test folder. Check the restored files.
After a successful restore test, set a schedule, select Apply and check Next Backup. Vorta must be running when the schedule fires.
