Install on your computer · Instructions checked 2026-10-15

1. Use the project’s official downloads page linked in its README for a Windows installer or your Linux distribution’s package instructions.
2. Launch the installed app and create a small test entry for a selected date. Try formatting, a tag and search before moving an existing journal.
3. Use the documented export functionality to keep an independently readable copy such as plain text or HTML. Check attachments and links in the exported result.
4. Back up the journal’s data separately. Formatting and export do not imply encrypted storage or a hosted account; review where your OS and backup tools store copies.

RedNotebook is free software. Its own source uses GPL-2.0-or-later; bundled LGPL-3.0/GPL-3.0 components make the combined distribution GPL-3.0-or-later. There is no required journal subscription. You supply backup storage. This is a local journaling alternative to part of an Evernote workflow, not a hosted team workspace or included cloud synchronization service.
