Platform information checked 2026-10-20. QOwnNotes is free GPL-2.0 desktop software; local Markdown notes do not require a paid account, hosted server or AI provider. Your computer and storage are separate. Optional Nextcloud/ownCloud synchronization can require hosting or a service plan. Opt-in AI supports provider APIs and scripts for local backends such as Ollama or llama.cpp: hosted API usage may cost money or have limits, while local models need suitable hardware and carry their own licenses. AI prompts and enabled external agents can access the notes you provide. It covers local note-taking, tasks and supported Evernote imports, without promising every Evernote or Notion collaboration, OCR or AI feature.
Keep Markdown notes and to-do lists in local files, with optional Nextcloud sync, scripts and AI-assisted text tools.

Official distribution and installation documentation reviewed. AltStack did not install or execute the application.
Install on your computer · Instructions checked 2026-10-20
Open the official installation page and choose the package for your system. The reviewed release is 26.10.8. Current Windows Qt6 builds require Windows 10 or newer; the macOS Universal Qt6 build requires macOS 13 or newer.
Windows: download QOwnNotes.zip from the official release and unzip the complete archive into a folder you can write to, then run QOwnNotes.exe. macOS: open the official QOwnNotes.dmg and drag QOwnNotes into Applications; consult the provider instructions if macOS cannot verify the app.
Linux: use one of the package methods documented for your distribution. The provider-linked, community-maintained Flathub edition uses org.qownnotes.QOwnNotes. Its documented commands are flatpak install flathub org.qownnotes.QOwnNotes and flatpak run org.qownnotes.QOwnNotes after Flathub is configured.
Choose a local note folder, create a short Markdown note and confirm it is saved there before importing a larger library. Keep a backup of existing files. A cloud server is optional for this local workflow.
Enable synchronization or AI only if you need it. Review server/provider settings, credentials, resource costs and the information sent to the chosen service; a local model is a separate installation. The optional MCP server exposes note search/fetch to authenticated agents, so keep its token private.
Provider-documentation review only; no application, installer, downloaded model or candidate repository code was executed.
Organize notes, documents, and projects in one workspace.
The cloud Personal plan is USD 0 with limits. Pro costs USD 20/member/month billed monthly, or USD 16/member/month billed annually. Self-hosting and optional external models use your own resources and may incur separate costs.
AI second brain for research, automation, and personal agents.
This local edition needs no paid model API or required software subscription. Your computer, downloads, disk space and electricity are separate. Optional hosted services and remote models can charge. Search engines can rate-limit or block requests. Local answers can be wrong; validate sources. No cloud allowance or unlimited hosted compute is included.
