AI can help you find material and organise it, but a confident summary is not evidence on its own. Keep the original documents and links beside the generated answer. A useful research workflow makes it easy to check where each important claim came from.

Separate search from document analysis

A search assistant helps locate material on the web. A document tool works with files you provide or connect. A chat model without either feature may answer from its training and still miss recent information. Decide which kind of information the task needs. If you are analysing a report, use the actual report rather than a general prompt about the subject. If you need a current rule, announcement, or product limit, open the publisher’s page and check its date.

Create a small source set

Collect the most relevant original documents first: official documentation, research papers, announcements, or source data. Record the title, URL, date, and the question each source helps answer. Add secondary commentary when it provides useful context, but keep it distinct from the original evidence. If a document changes over time, keep an allowed copy or note the version you used. This gives the assistant better material and gives you a reliable starting point for checking its output.

Ask for a structured answer with uncertainty

Request the main claims, supporting passages or page references, disagreements between sources, and any missing information. Ask the model to say when the provided material does not answer a question. Keep the output short enough to inspect. For a long document, work through sections rather than assuming one prompt covers every detail. A retrieval system may select only part of a file. Check whether tables, footnotes, scans, and appendices were read correctly before relying on a summary.

Open every important citation

Verify that a link resolves to the intended source and that the source actually supports the associated claim. Check names, dates, units, and whether the evidence refers to the same version or population. A real citation can still be attached to an unsupported statement. For numbers, compare them with the original table or calculate the result independently. When a claim affects a significant decision, read the surrounding context rather than only the quoted sentence. Mark uncertain conclusions as uncertain.

Understand costs and data handling

A free document interface may connect to a paid model or require a server you operate. Check file limits, storage, indexing costs, and any model usage charges. Review whether uploaded files are retained and who can access a shared workspace. Test with non-sensitive material before adding private documents. If you use a local model, inspect external integrations that may still transmit data. Keep a way to export source files and notes if you later change the tool.

Turn the result into your own notes

Write a short conclusion that separates source facts from your interpretation. Keep the source list and note what remains unresolved. Use AI to organise drafts or suggest follow-up questions, then review the final explanation yourself. AltStack’s research category helps you compare search and document tools, while the comparison view keeps pricing differences visible. The aim is to reduce the effort of finding and understanding evidence while preserving your ability to check it.
